IUD/Mirena

The appointment will be needed to determine its suitability and to carry out a sexual health check prior to it being inserted.

The IUD goes in the uterus. It can be used as a type of contraceptive or to manage painful, heavy periods.

Highly effective solution

As a contraceptive it is more than 99% effective. It can be left in for 3, 5 or 10 years depending on the type of IUD.

There are two types:

– an IUD that contains hormones (Mirena or Jadess)
– an IUD that contains copper.

It can then be inserted at a second slightly longer appointment by Dr Chloe Dearlove or Dr Emily Chapple

Once inserted it will not affect sexual intercourse or the use of tampons. If it is not feeling comfortable it can be reassessed or removed by any of the doctors.
